This is the fossilized shell of the marine organi ammonite, which lived during the Jurassic and Cretaceous Periods. The iridescence of the fossil and its rarity have garnered it status as a gemstone, called ammolite. It is mined on the slopes of the Rocky Mountains in Alberta.
